As the nation prepares for the solar eclipse on August 21, pet owners may be wondering about how it will affect their dogs and cats. Are viewing glasses necessary for pets (other than for a cute photo op)? Purina veterinarian and pet expert Gerardo Perez-Camargo says there is no need to worry.
“During the eclipse, in areas where there will be a significant decrease of light, most animals will behave as they normally would when the sun sets. Some dogs may think it is time to go to bed, and some outdoor cats may want to go hunting, which is what they usually do at dusk, but there is no reason to be concerned about their safety or with them being outdoors during the eclipse.”
