Franklin County Humane Society to make shelter improvements with donation from Nestlé Purina
Franklin County Humane Society (FCHS) has announced that it has received a $30,000 grant from Nestlé Purina PetCare Company, a premiere global manufacturer of pet products headquartered in St. Louis.
“This grant is very important, as it will help us in achieving a warm, welcoming environment for pets entering our shelter and also be more inviting for potential adopters,” says Donna King, Shelter Manager. “Our desire is to become more accessible to the needs of our communities.”
Jean Seidel, Assistant Shelter Manager, adds, “We could not venture forth with these projects to aid in helping the shelter grow for the future without the support of Purina.”
FCHS serves Franklin County as well as 10 other surrounding communities. Franklin County does not have a county-funded and managed animal control. The shelter takes in homeless dogs and cats to keep them safe and off the streets until their owners can be found or until they can be put up for adoption. FCHS is a private shelter and depends almost entirely on the minimal adoption fees and generous donations it receives from community members through fundraising programs.
Upgrades as a result of the grant from Nestlé Purina will include the addition of an enclosed cattery, complete with climbing structures and ample space for playing, which will offer a stress-free and enriching environment for the adoptable cats in FCHS’s care and better showcase their personalities, resulting in more adoptions. Kennels will also be repaired to provide a safer and more comfortable environment for adoptable dogs, including added insulation to help keep the dogs warm or cool, depending on the season.
“Franklin County doesn’t have as many resources as other counties when it comes to caring for homeless pets and offering much-need responsible pet education for the community. This makes the role of Franklin County Humane Society that much more significant in this area. It’s important that we all work together to make Franklin County a more pet-friendly place, especially since Purina Farms and the Franklin County Humane Society both call the County home. It starts with helping the neediest pets that end up at Franklin County Humane Society by increasing the capacity of the shelter to accept more homeless pets and improve the dogs’ and cats’ living conditions while they are in their care,” says Kaite Flamm, Manager, Purina Event Center.
The donation was presented Feb. 28 as part of Responsible Pet Owner Day at the Purina Event Center in Gray Summit, Missouri. Nestlé Purina believes in creating shared value and supporting organizations that provide assistance to people and pets in the communities where it has a presence.
